GAF denies plots of military coup, vows to promote peace during 2024 elections

Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have strongly refuted recent claims suggesting they threatened to seize control of the government if violence erupts during the 2024 elections.

These allegations, reportedly linked to comments made by Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), were dismissed by GAF as baseless.

In a statement released on Friday, August 23, 2024, the GAF made it clear that they had not conducted any press conference or issued any warnings about a potential coup.

They reiterated their commitment to supporting the Ghana Police Service when called upon to maintain peace and order, stressing that their involvement in security matters does not imply any intention to overthrow the government.

Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, stated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”

In their recent statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) urged civil society organizations and the media to avoid dragging their name into politically charged narratives that could escalate tensions.

GAF emphasized the importance of collaboration among all parties to create a secure and peaceful atmosphere as the country approaches the December 2024 elections.

The Armed Forces reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining peace and stability, assuring the public that they can go about their daily lives without fear.

They stressed the need for collective efforts to safeguard the nation’s tranquility during this critical period.
