I’m not obliged to declare my political affiliation to anyone – George Quaye

Ghanaian playwright George Quaye has addressed critics who accused him of being affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following a Facebook post.

The controversy erupted after Quaye shared a photo of NPP flagbearers Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh at Prempeh’s unveiling on July 9, 2024, captioning the picture as “beautiful” and requesting the photographer’s contact details.

This post drew criticism from several individuals, including Edem Agbana, a former Deputy National Youth Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who urged Quaye to be transparent about his political leanings.

Responding on July 11, Quaye noted that the reactions missed the post’s original intent, as no one provided the photographer’s contact information.

Instead, the comments reflected partisan sentiments, with opposition members expressing anger, party loyalists showing support, and others ready to argue with those holding different views.

Quaye emphasized that his political stance has always been clear to those familiar with him. He criticized the expectation that everyone should openly declare their political affiliations, arguing that such decisions are personal.

He stated, “Just for clarity, where I stand as far as GH Politics is concerned has never been in doubt. Those who know me know it. The fact that you wear yours like armour doesn’t mean everyone should. What you may call ‘cowardice’ may also be someone’s style. So please stop barking ‘Be Bold Be Bold.'”
