A concerned citizen has lamented the deplorable state of the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
In a tweet shared by @YayraKoku and seen by TIG.post, a man describes how the 500-bed capacity hospital could serve over six communities once completed adding that, the abandoned hospital is larger than the ‘famous’ Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
“This is Atwima Nwabiagya, where the Afari Government Hospital is located. This hospital, with a 500-bed capacity, is larger than Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, yet it has been neglected and is now overrun with weeds” he fumed.
He stated that the current administration has repeatedly promised to commission the hospital, but these promises have yet to be fulfilled.
“The cars parked here are engulfed by vegetation, and while there are quarters for workers, the entire area is abandoned, guarded only by security personnel
It’s been eight years, and every year brings new promises about its commissioning” he said.
He recounts how the Vice president and flagbearer of the ruling NPP Dr Bawumia promised to commission to the two hospitals in August during his campaign tour to the Ashanti Region expressong his doubts over the potency of such promise being fulfilled.
Considering the current state of the hospital, he asked ” Does this look like a hospital that can be commissioned in August?”
During his visit to the Ashanti region, the Vice President mentioned that both the Afari Military Hospital and the Sewia Hospital would be commissioned by August 2024″ he continued.
He urged the government o halt some of the Agenda 111 project to focus on the completion of the Afari Military Hospital.
“Instead of pursuing the Agenda 111 project in Kumasi, can’t we focus on completing these two hospitals first? They could serve around ten constituencies. It’s frustrating to see such a significant facility left to deteriorate, especially when it has the potential to provide crucial healthcare services” he said.
About Afari Hospital
The Afari Community Hospital, also known as the Afari Military Hospital, is located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Its construction began in 2014 during the presidency of John Dramani Mahama under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. The project was initiated as part of a broader effort to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country.
The hospital was intended to be a state-of-the-art facility with modern medical equipment to provide high-quality healthcare services to the military personnel and the general public. It was part of a series of health infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has continued the project. However, there have been delays and challenges in its final completion and operationalization.
