Music record label OFM Computer World, has lodged a complaint with YouTube, urging the platform to remove Team Eternity Ghana‘s popular track “Defe Defe” due to alleged copyright violations.
The label claimed that the song reused segments from the copyrighted song “Defe Defe” by Hallelujah Voices without authorization.
In a letter addressed to YouTube, OFM Computer World requested that the song’s visibility be altered to prevent access pending potential legal actions.
They emphasized the need for YouTube to privatize the video until the copyright issues are resolved in court.
Furthermore, the letter accused Team Eternity of frequently sampling songs from other artists without obtaining proper permissions.
This copyright dispute arose following a Facebook post by Kwame Mickey, the executive producer of Hallelujah Voices’ “Defe Defe,” where he alleged that Team Eternity Ghana had infringed on their copyright by incorporating the “defe defe” line in their new hit song.
While some argue that the structural elements and melodies of the two songs differ, Kwame Mickey contends that the lyrical content similarities warrant legal action. The original “Defe Defe” song was written by Osuani Afrifa and executively produced by Kwame Mickey for Kaakyire Music Productions, released in 2004.
This copyright dispute has sparked widespread debate, with some asserting that Team Eternity’s “Defe Defe” is distinct from Hallelujah Voices’ song, while others argue that identical lyrical lines constitute copyright infringement.
