Wife of musician Sarkodie, Tracy Owusu Addo, recently joined the discourse on the issue of locked-up Global Fund donations of critical health supplies at Tema Port.
Her input, initially an informal explanation for the incident that has been making headlines, took a political turn when activists added further insights.
In her post, Tracy highlighted the government’s purported 15% stake in Tema Port and mentioned its current ownership by a French billionaire.
She shared a link to a 2021 Africa Confidential report titled: “SPECIAL REPORT: How Vincent Bolloré won control of Ghana’s biggest port.”
The post gained significant traction, amassing over 1.4 million views on X (formerly Twitter) with 679 comments, over 1,500 reposts, and more than 3,800 likes.
Comments on her post were split into two main camps – those who supported her stance and those who criticized it. Supporters emphasized that the transfer of control occurred during John Mahama’s administration.
On the other hand, critics argued that the contract with Bollore was a Build-Operate-Transfer arrangement, so it wouldn’t be accurate to say he “owns” the port.
Some of Tracy’s detractors accused her of unnecessary politicization due to her husband’s ties to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Sarkodie had campaigned for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in both 2016 and 2020.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Bernard Okoe Boye has issued urgent instructions for clearing the locked-up containers at the Port.
