The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has admitted to obtaining a firearm for self-protection against the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Reflecting on the 2020 elections, Ms. Okunor accused the MP of threatening her life on four separate occasions, expressing frustration over the lack of police intervention following these incidents.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday (June 5), Ms. Okunor stressed the necessity of carrying a gun, asserting, “I can best protect myself and not any other person against Hawa Koomson.”

She recalled that during the last general elections, Ms. Koomson wielded a firearm at her on multiple occasions.

Ms. Okunor pointed out that despite her reports, there were no arrests, inquiries, or investigations conducted, and the cases were ultimately ignored by authorities.

“When we look back at the 2019-2020 elections, Hawa Koomson pulled a gun on me on four separate occasions. There were no arrests, no interrogations, no investigations, nothing. The matter just faded away. And since then, the police haven’t offered any form of protection for me,” she remarked.

Ms. Okunor also addressed recent rumors of her arrest, clarifying that she was not detained following the violent incidents in Kasoa.

On June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service apprehended three individuals, including Ms. Okunor, for unlawful possession of a firearm in Ofaakor, near Kasoa.

The trio was intercepted near the Electoral Commission’s office while traveling in a Honda CRV, from which a pump-action gun and ammunition were seized.

The arrest occurred in the aftermath of a violent altercation at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa, which resulted in injuries to four individuals.

During the incident, Ato Koomson, a son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, sustained a stab wound to the chest.
