Former CEO of defunct UT Bank, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng (rtd), in a recent interview on Joy News, voiced concerns about potential election rigging by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Amoabeng warned that such actions could result in unrest within the country, citing the NPP’s track record and economic mismanagement as contributing factors to his apprehension.

“I am scared a bit, but I don’t waste my time fearing what is going to happen in the future. I believe in the present,” he stated.

He did not mince words in his assessment of the NPP’s performance, asserting that they had “messed up badly and disappointed Ghanaians.”

However, he also noted that the party possessed significant financial resources, which he implied could be used to influence the electoral process.

“But I am scared in the sense that I think even though it is not difficult to say that the NPP had messed up badly and disappointed Ghanaians, they have a lot of money.

“Stolen or whatever, they have a lot of it. And therefore, they will use it to try to stay in power.

“That is where my fear comes in because I think if there is an obvious win for the NDC and… they can use their money and influence to rig and do all sorts of things, things might explode…so we have to pray,” he added.

The upcoming 2024 general election is shaping up to be a head-to-head contest between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former president John Dramani Mahama.

With President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tenure set to end in 2025, the NPP is rallying behind a ‘breaking the 8’ campaign, aiming to secure a third consecutive term in office.

Meanwhile, the NDC, under the leadership of Mahama, who is seeking his fourth consecutive presidential bid, is striving to regain power after being voted out in 2016.
