An Accra High Court has deemed moot an application for an injunction aimed at preventing the organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil from gathering at the Revolution Square, opposite the Jubilee House.

This decision followed information that the organizers had already changed their gathering point and route for the vigil, which was one of the reasons the police, in a motion filed on May 20, requested the court to halt the event entirely.

Earlier, the conveners had disagreed with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on the starting point for their protest.

During a meeting at the Regional Police Headquarters on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the Accra Regional Police Command expressed concerns to the organisers regarding the proposed venue, Revolution Square, due to its proximity to the Jubilee House, the seat of government, which is designated as a security zone.

The Command recommended relocating the protest to Independence Square and also expressed concerns about the proposed timing for the conclusion of the protest, set for midnight.

In court on Friday, May 24, the case was withdrawn to accommodate the new amendment to the venue, which is yet to be made public.

One of the conveners of the vigil, Selorm Dramani Dzramado, told the media that they have decided to amend the venue for the vigil in accordance with the Public Order Act.

He added that the court has yet to give the green light for the vigil and that “there is going to be a meeting with the police, so this thing [processes for the vigil] is going to start afresh.”

“We told the public why we chose the Revolution Square because it holds a certain historical significance and its proximity to the Presidency so the police insistence on us changing the venue, we complied with Article 41(i) of the Constitution which says that the citizens of Ghana must always cooperate with the lawful agencies in the maintenance of law and order to write a letter to the police to announce the change of venue and date,” he added.
