Akufo-Addo calls on world leaders to help secure release of Niger’s president

President Akufo-Addo has issued a heartfelt plea to the Commonwealth of Nations, urging them to support the efforts calling for the release of Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum.

Mr Bazoum was taken into custody by soldiers, primarily from the presidential guard, on July 27, resulting in the suspension of the constitution, the shutdown of national institutions, and the sealing of borders.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his concern about recent coups in Africa and the grave threats they pose to peace and economic stability.

Addressing the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Accra, Akufo-Addo emphasized the vital role of MPs as champions of democracy. He underscored the current challenges facing democracy in Africa due to unconstitutional changes in government.

He stated, “the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, indeed, the Commonwealth itself should join ECOWAS and the African Union in demanding the immediate unconditional release from unjustifiable detention of the democratically elected president of the Republic of Niger, His Excellency Mohamed Bazoum.

“Democracy and the stability that generally accompanies democratic governments are essential for the future prosperity of the African continent.”

Akufo-Addo highlighted that democracy and the stability it brings are crucial for the future prosperity of the African continent. President Mohamed Bazoum remains in the custody of the former presidential guard.
