UN’s human rights head extremely concerned about Niger’s low standard of living – UN

The head of the UN’s human rights office has voiced deep concern for the Nigerese people, who he claims will now face even greater hardships as a result of last month’s coup.

Volker Türk urged the military generals to swiftly reestablish the rule of law.

He claimed that in a nation where over half the population lives in abject poverty, the situation was getting worse due to closed borders, halted trade, power outages, and increased food prices.

In order to coordinate potential military action should diplomatic efforts to overthrow the coup fail, West African army chiefs are gathering in Ghana for a second day at the time of his remarks.
