Kenyan Senator Accused of Scholarship Fraud Released on Bail

A senator and two former county officials connected to a scholarship controversy have been released on bail by a Kenyan high court.

The three were detained on Wednesday on suspicion of conspiring to steal approximately 1.1 billion Kenyan shillings ($7.6 million; £5.9 million), which were intended to pay for Kenyan students’ continued study in Finland and Canada.

The senator and his accomplice are anticipated to be charged with 11 offences. The senator has already refuted claims that he stole the funds.

A magistrate ruled on Thursday that the trial could not begin until all four accused had been in court.

On Wednesday, Kenyan police reported that one of the accused, Joseph Maritim, had escaped.

Zephania Yego, Mr. Maritim’s attorney, however, said the court that his client was not aware of the allegations when he arrived in Canada on August 13 but will return to enter a plea.

According to local media, the prosecution intends to file an appeal against the senator and his co-accused’s release.
