7 road trip essentials you’ll need for Accra to London journey

Unless you’ve been completely out of touch, you’re likely familiar with the extraordinary feat accomplished by a team of nine daring Ghanaians who have etched their names in history by embarking on an incredible road journey from Accra to London. Spanning an impressive 10,000 kilometers, this remarkable expedition has captivated the fascination of numerous individuals.

Inspired by the stories of Ghanaian travellers to different countries, these intrepid explorers set out to drive from one continent to another, creating an incredible travel tale that will be remembered for years to come.

Starting the expedition on Sunday, July 23, 2023, the group embarked on a carefully planned route that took them through scenic towns and cities.

Their journey kicked off in Accra and led them through Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Dormaa, before crossing into Cote d’Ivoire via Golokrom. What began as a group of twelve people driving five distinct Ghanaian-registered vehicles – including a Mercedez Benz G-Wagon, two Toyota Landcruisers (V8), a Lexus RX 350, and a Ford F150 Raptor – gradually evolved as they encountered different terrains and challenges along the way.

As they navigated their way through various countries and landscapes, the travellers encountered unexpected experiences that tested their resolve.

Despite facing their fair share of obstacles, the team’s determination propelled them forward.

They demonstrated meticulous planning by securing essential documents well ahead of time, including Ghana cards, Schengen visas, UK visas, Laissez Passe for each border, an ECOWAS brown card for the car, and money for unexpected situations.

So, if you’re ever inspired to embark on an epic road trip of your own, here’s a handy list of essentials to ensure a smooth journey:

  1. Clothes

Pack a mix of comfortable clothing suitable for various weather conditions, as you’ll likely encounter diverse climates during your journey.

  1. Food and Personal Grooming Essentials

Having a stash of non-perishable food items like Gari, Shito, groundnut, sardine and personal grooming products can be a lifesaver, especially when you’re in remote areas.

  1. Auto Mechanic Tools

A basic set of auto mechanic tools can be invaluable in case of minor vehicle issues that can be fixed on the spot.

  1. Map and Compass

Despite modern technology, a physical map and compass can come in handy if you venture off the beaten path and lose the GPS signal.

  1. Essential Documents

Ensure you have all necessary identification, visas, and car-related documents to smoothly navigate border crossings and legal requirements.

  1. Currency and Money

Carry local currency for each country you’ll be passing through, along with some extra cash for unexpected situations.

  1. Research and Planning

Thoroughly research your route, potential challenges, and available resources in advance. Engage with fellow road travellers and gather insights from their experiences.

While the journey is bound to be filled with adventure and excitement, it’s important to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

Just as Kwabena Ayirebi of Wanderlust Ghana shared, encountering local laws against tinted car windows in Mauritania led to unexpected delays for the team.

As such, flexibility and adaptability are key traits for any road trip enthusiast.
