No Ghanaian will be disenfranchised in 2024 – Tamale Central MP assures

Member of Parliament from Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, asserts that the minority caucus is devoted to ensuring fairness in the 2024 elections.

He claims that although the caucus is aware of efforts to deny voting rights to some Ghanaians, such an action will be opposed.

“We will do everything humanly possible to ensure that the people of this country are not unjustifiably disenfranchised,” he said on JoyNews on Wednesday.

Mr Muhammed explained that the NDC is prepared to accept the outcome of the 2024 elections if it is transparent.

“We will not allow anybody to be disenfranchised in this country. Let’s go into the elections freely and fairly, don’t disenfranchise anybody,” he said.

His comments come on the back of the push by the Electoral Commission (EC) for the Constitutional Instrument (CI) which would make the Ghana Card the sole document for the registration of voters.

This, the Minority side of the House has vehemently resisted.

However, when the EC boss appeared before Parliament on Tuesday, February 28, she attributed her push for the CI to the 40,000 names expunged from the voter register due to the guarantor system.

This number she believes has the capacity to decide who leads the country.

Meanwhile, the former Deputy of Trade and Industry Minister alleged that the EC is being managed by New Patriotic Party activists who will do anything in their power to ensure the party wins elections.

“That is why we told Jean Mensa that if there is chaos and anarchy as a result of either her incompetence or because she is an NPP activist. …It was proven in court during the petition that she is indeed a family member of the first lady. She is not only a member but an activist.

“Dr Bossman Asare was my two years senior in Legon, I was in the psychology department, he was in the political science department, and he was an NPP activist. When I came to the department to do my PhD, he was the head of the department and he was the TESCON patron,” he emphasised.

He added that he had already noted that the ruling party has begun suggesting that since APC of Nigeria has been able to break the eight; they are confident that it will be the same for Ghana.

“I have heard some of them say, in Nigeria, they have broken the eight…Ghana is not Nigeria and this country is not owned by anybody,” he said.

The Tamale Central MP said Ghana’s democracy has an outstanding track record.

“Even Nigerians themselves will tell you the systems they have in place are not the best. In this country our democracy is tried and tested…you now have MPs say that Nigerians have broken the eight, we will also break the eight. They are not interested in breaking the economy, they are interested in breaking the eight. They care less about the suffering of the people of this country,” he said.
