Some online portals have fallen victim to misidentification while reporting on the impact of Christian Atsu’s death, whose demise has plundered Ghana into a state of mourning.
The wife of the late Black Stars player has been misidentified.
This has been the case due to a misreportage by some Ghanaian media houses on a video shared by a woman with the TikTok ID @sofiakasy who was mourning her dead husband.
The said woman is also a victim of the February 6 earthquake that hit Turkey and Russia that has killed over 35,000 people.
In the viral video, she said “I know it hurts, but I’m trying to be strong for my kids. I miss him. I miss him so much.’”
Without further checks, a number of online portals jumped onto the story and published articles with headlines such as “Christian Atsu’s Wife Marie-Claire Rupio Speaks In Sad Audio: ‘I’m Staying Strong For My Kids But I Miss Him.”
The misreportage got the attention of Marie-Claire Rupio, the actual wife of Christian Atsu, who condemned the lack of efforts by the sites to verify before publishing such articles.
She requested that such stories be taken down since he never uttered such words as being purported.
“There is a video going around from a woman who pretends to be me. This woman is not me. I have seen it on GhanaWeb I ask you to take this video down immediately.”
“This is a very hard and painful few days. This is not okay. If you know the site please send this to them,” she added.
Meanwhile, the alleged wife of Christian Atsu has come to clear the air over the matter. She noted that her statement was misconstrued and confirmed that she was not Christian Atsu’s wife.
“I am getting a lot of comments about me being Atsu’s wife. I am not Atsu’s wife, I do not know even if I am saying the name right, but I feel sorry for his wife,” she said.
@sofiakasy Our life together was very short, but I promise my love for you will be till my last breath 💔 #turkey🇹🇷 #earthquake #allah #duadunia #brokenlove ♬ original sound – Sofya
“I lost my husband, my fiancé, my everything in the Turkey earthquake, and I just wanted to come out here and let everyone know I am not Atsu’s wife,” she added.
Her recent comment ends the misidentification that has gone on for a while now.
Christian Atsu had just one wife, Marie-Claire Rupio, whom he had three children with – two sons and a daughter. Atsu and Rupio tied the knot in 2012 and were married for 11 years.
