Man Utd reduce capacity for Burnley clash on safety advice

The Carabao Cup match between Manchester United and Burnley will be played in front of a smaller audience per safety officials’ recommendations.

Wednesday’s matchup between the Championship leaders and the Red Devils will take place at Old Trafford, where Clarets manager and former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will visit his former foes.

The North West Ambulance Service’s day of industrial action, which results in the absence of ambulance service workers, falls on the same day as the game.

Tiers in the West Stand and North Stand must be closed at the request of the authorities as part of a “strong” medical plan, allowing about 62,000 people to attend; Old Trafford can typically hold about 74,000.

A statement on the club’s official website said: “Everyone at Manchester United shares the inevitable disappointment caused by this news, particularly to those ticket holders who will be impacted.

“However, the safety of our fans is always our priority. As the match is currently sold out, we have written to fans in the affected areas offering the option of a full refund.

“No action is required from fans with tickets in other areas of the ground at this time.

“We will do our utmost to relocate anyone who is impacted and has not chosen to accept a refund, prioritising full and cup season ticket holders.”
