Weija Floods: Houses built on waterways to be demolished

The National Disaster Organization (NADMO) has revealed that it will soon embark on a demolishing exercise to pull down houses built on waterways in the Weija-Gbawe municipality.

Director-General of NADMO, Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh, made the revelation in the wake of the spillage of the Weija Dam, which flooded several communities within the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The spillage, according to reports, was caused by torrential rains which contributed to the water level in the dam rising above its maximum level of 46 feet to 48 feet.

In the aftermath of the spillage, thousands of residents of Oblogo, Tetegu, Weija and Ashalaja have been displaced with several properties destroyed.

Mr Agyemang Prempeh, who visited the affected communities, noted that structures built along waterways contributed to the devastating floods after the spillage.

He explained that these aforementioned communities were submerged after the spillage due to the blockage of the free flow of the water by unauthorized buildings.

In order to avert a recurrence, the demolishing of these structures built on waterways will help maintain buffers of the Weija Dam to contain water whenever there was spillage.

Mr Prempeh further asserted that persons whose building will be affected during the demolishing exercise will not be compensated.

According to him, none of the residents on those sites had a permit to build there.

In the meantime, NADMO has provided some relief items to affected residents displaced by the floods.
