An inferno has swept through Ayigbetown, a suburb in the Tema metropolis, leaving scores of residents homeless as over 52 structures were engulfed in flames.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire originated from a wooden structure on Sunday night when a young man attempted to connect a regulator to a gas cylinder near an open fire.
The fire quickly spread, consuming numerous homes and displacing many families, per a video shared by AdomNews.
Confirming the tragic incident, Ebenezer Yenzu, the Public Relations Officer for the Fire Service in the Tema region, urged residents to adhere to safety standards when handling gas cylinders to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Ebi Bright, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the Tema Central constituency, criticized the government for its failure to address the housing needs of squatters in the affected area.
