Former Interior Minister, Alhaji Malik Alhassan Yakubu, has refuted claims suggesting that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, might encounter challenges in securing votes in traditional Akan regions.
Dr. Bawumia, hailing from the Northern Region, has raised questions about his ability to garner support in the southern part of the country.
During an interview with Citi News, the former Yendi legislator argued that Dr. Bawumia’s performance in regions like Ashanti demonstrates his capability to attract votes and lead the party to victory in the 2024 elections.
Alhaji Malik Alhassan Yakubu explained, “If you look at the overall voting pattern in the recent election that led to his selection a few days ago, you will see that it extends across the country. If you carefully analyze the situation, even though Ashanti is a major stronghold of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia performed exceptionally well in that region.”
He continued, “So this should reassure anyone that there should be no concerns about the fact that Dr. Bawumia will receive a significant number of votes from the regions considered typically Akan, and that voters from those areas might oppose a non-Akan candidate. We have no doubt that he will amass a substantial number of votes in Akan areas and complement them with votes from other regions. We are confident in his success.”
