Manchester United goalkeeper, André Onana, has joined the select group of African goalkeepers who have graced the Premier League stage.
Making his debut against Wolves on Monday, August 14, 2023, the Cameroonian shot-stopper now stands as the fifth African goalkeeper to have played in the Premier League.
The quartet of goalkeepers preceding him includes Richard Kingson, the former Black Stars goalkeeper (associated with Blackpool, Wigan, and Birmingham), Bruce Grobbelaar, the former Zimbabwean goalkeeper (associated with Liverpool and Southampton), Carl Ikeme, the former Nigerian goalkeeper (linked to Wolves), and Édouard Mendy, the Senegalese goalkeeper (representing Chelsea).
André Onana’s inaugural Premier League appearance proved commendable. He showcased a strong performance in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory, making essential saves and securing a clean sheet.
Playing the entire match, Onana managed 51 touches, executed eight recoveries, and completed six saves, earning a FotMob rating of 8.1.
Having made a transfer from Ajax and Inter Milan to Manchester United during the summer for 51 million euros, André Onana committed to a five-year contract that includes an option to extend for an additional year.
