UEFA Women’s Champions League: Real Madrid secure quarter-final spot

Real Madrid held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw, denying them the chance to advance to the Women’s Champions League quarterfinals.

Emma Hayes’ team, last year’s runners-up to Lyon, would have advanced out of Group A with two games remaining had they won four straight matches this season.

At Estadio Alfredo di Stefano, Guro Reiten‘s penalty, which blasted in off goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez, negated an earlier attempt from Caroline Weir, thus they were left with a draw.

After convincingly defeating Vllaznia 4-0, Paris Saint-Germain overtook Madrid to take second position in Group A, with Vllaznia’s elimination later confirmed.

When PSG and Madrid square off at Parc des Princes the following week, PSG will advance with a victory thanks to goals from Kadidiatou Diani, Ramona Bachmann, and Magnaba Folquet.

Wolfsburg, a two-time winner, is the first team to go to the quarterfinals of this season following a thrilling 4-2 victory over Roma.

Lena Lattwein and SveindIs Jonsdottir also scored, sandwiching Ewa Pajor’s brace that brought her group stage tally to six goals, making Roma’s goals from Andressa Alves Da Silva and Sophie Roman Haug mere consolation.

After St Polten lost to Slavia Praha in the other Group B match, the German team’s 11th appearance in the round of eight in as many continental campaigns was confirmed.

Kristyna Ruzickova gave the Czech team their first goal of the year, but Mateja Zver’s free kick prevents them from moving on to the knockout stage.
