SIM re-registration: Cases of SIM-related fraud declined – Communications Minister

Communication and Digitalization Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has revealed that the SIM card re-registration has begun yielding positive results.

Madam Owusu-Ekuful indicated that since the inception of the SIM re-registration exercise, Ghana has started recording a steady decline in cases of SIM-related fraud.

In a statement issued on Friday, November 11, to announce updates on the SIM card registration exercise, she noted that “we can attest to the fact that there has been a noticeable decline in SIM-related fraud since the commencement of the registration exercise.”

The Communication Minister, however, failed to give a specific percentage decline in SIM-related fraud cases in Ghana.

Touching on the advantages of the SIM re-registration exercise, she noted that the exercise will provide a secure environment for Ghanaians to access digital services.

“ICT should be accessible to all without any risk and the SIM registration exercise will solve a lot of issues in the industry.”

However, she stated that recalcitrant citizens who fail to partake in the registration exercise will not enjoy the benefits of the exercise

Extension of registration deadline

She further added that any SIM card that has been linked to the Ghana Card but failed to complete the biometric process will be deactivated on November 30, 2022.

She said “despite ample opportunity afforded all to complete the registration of their SIM cards, some who have the Ghana Cards and have begun the process have failed to complete the registration. That is their choice and we cannot begrudge them,”

However, for those without Ghanacard, she said “a further announcement will be made shortly on measures to accommodate those who genuinely do not have the Ghana Cards, once the ongoing consultations have been completed.”
