Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has proposed the search of the residences of all government ministers and appointees as part of the anti-corruption efforts.
Speaking in reference to the case of former Sanitation, Minister Cecilia Dapaah, Mr Kpebu stated that conducting searches of government officials’ homes would serve as a strong statement of the government’s commitment to combating corruption.
He emphasized, “let’s search the officers at the Jubilee House, let’s search the Ministers, let’s search them…the monies are in their homes. If we don’t do this we are not fighting corruption. If we don’t search all the ministers forget it we are just playing.”
This call by Martin Kpebu follows the discovery of $590,000 and GH¢2.7 million in cash during a search of the residence of the former Minister, which is suspected to be illicitly obtained wealth.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has initiated investigations into the matter, and Cecilia Dapaah has been charged with money laundering and other corruption-related offenses.
Mr Kpebu defended his suggestion by stating that it is crucial to send a powerful message about the government’s seriousness in combating corruption.
“Let’s search them all of them,” Mr Kpebu said, “But we are men and we need to fight like men otherwise let’s forget about the corruption fight,” he stated.
