The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has provided assurance to the leadership of the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest, Democracy Hub, regarding the promotion of a democratic atmosphere.

This commitment was conveyed through a press statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, following a meeting that took place on Friday.

The meeting was convened in response to the turmoil that transpired on Thursday, September 21, 2023, during the initial day of the planned three-day protest.

“We would like to assure the public that the police service is dedicated  to fostering a democratic environment where citizens rights are upheld while maintaining the security and stability of the nation” the press statement.

During the meeting, the police reiterated their stance, emphasising that the Police Service does not oppose individuals or groups wishing to engage in demonstrations, as they have previously demonstrated their capability to provide security for such events.

However, the specific concern of the police in this particular case revolved around the chosen venue for the intended demonstration, namely the Jubilee House, which is designated as a high-security zone.

At the meeting, the leaders of the group provided assurances to the police. They conveyed their intent to engage in discussions with their members, aiming to reach a potential compromise regarding the demonstration’s venue, which they would subsequently communicate to the police.

“The leaders also assured the police that they would talk to their members to leave the streets while awaiting either a compromise decision between the police and the demonstrators on an alternative venue or the determination of the matter by the court,” the statement stated.
