Historian and lawyer Anokye Frimpong has offered insights into Ghana’s history during slavery and colonization.
In an August 2, 2023 interview with the media corrected the origin of Black Americans and Caribbean people tracing their ancestry to Ghana.
He revealed an agreement between Ashanti Chief Osei Kojo and Dogomba Chief Gariba, where the latter provided slaves and animals annually to the Ashantis.
This pact led to attacks on tribes in various regions, and these individuals were eventually sold to coastal states and into foreign slavery.
Frimpong highlighted the misconception that Black Americans are mostly Ashantis due to learning about Ashanti Kingdom history. In reality, many have northern origins.
He emphasized, “Northerners are like 80 per cent” of those who were enslaved, with Fantis, Akans, and coastal tribes sold later.
Frimpong’s perspective sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of Ghana’s history during the era of slavery and colonization.
