Newcastle United secured an impressive Carabao Cup fourth-round victory on Wednesday night at Old Trafford, defeating Manchester United for the first time since 2013. The goals from Miguel Almirón, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock sealed their triumph.

Substitute Almirón scored the opening goal, finishing a well-crafted move initiated by Tino Livramento. Teenager Hall then volleyed in a superb second goal, giving Eddie Howe’s team a comfortable lead at half-time.

Although the hosts made a brief attempt to rally, Willock’s brilliantly taken third goal, in his first start since May, secured Newcastle’s spot in the quarter-finals. They convincingly eliminated the defending champions, who had defeated Newcastle in the 2022/23 final.

Newcastle faced an early setback when Matt Targett was forced off within four minutes, and Almirón was brought on as his replacement. Eddie Howe’s team has been dealing with a series of injuries in recent weeks.

While Casemiro had an early attempt saved by former Manchester United loanee Martin Dúbravka, Newcastle dominated possession early on. Almirón’s delicate touch and precise finish into the far corner extended their lead.

Mason Mount had a chance for a quick response but failed to find the target. Newcastle then added a second goal through Chelsea loanee Hall, who volleyed the ball beautifully into the bottom right-hand corner.

Manchester United made changes at half-time, showing more vigor in the second half. However, just after the hour mark, Willock sealed the victory with a magnificent goal. Despite his recent return from a six-month injury layoff, he showcased his skills by striking a powerful and precise shot into the bottom corner.

Newcastle came close to adding another goal when Sean Longstaff, captaining the team on his 150th appearance for the club, narrowly missed the target. Their place in the quarter-finals was all but confirmed by then.
