Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, who also serves as a High Court judge, has been summoned before the Judicial Council due to recent comments he made about a court case.
The case in question involved the criminal prosecution of Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, known in his legal capacity as Justice Daniel Mensah, made the comments at an event organized by the John Evans Atta Mills Heritage in Sunyani. He called on the Attorney General to file a nolle prosequi in the case of the MP.
The chief argued that since the MP had been re-elected, following the cancellation of his 2020 election by a Supreme Court panel, there is overwhelming public endorsement of his candidature. He believed that this should lead to the discontinuation of his prosecution.
Additionally, he advocated for an amendment to the existing legal regime regarding the ineligibility of dual citizens to be elected as Members of Parliament.
His statements received significant criticism, especially from pro-government individuals, and have reportedly led to his appearance before a committee of the Judicial Council. This committee is chaired by the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonoo.
In response to the Judicial Council’s actions, the opposition National Democratic Congress has condemned their decision, viewing it as persecution against the Dormaahene (Paramount Chief).
