The management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) says it has been informed by the National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso (SONABEL) of plans to commence the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam.

This has become necessary owing to rising level of the dam and the amount of inflows into the catchment area of the dam.

As of Tuesday, the water level at the Bagre Dam was 233.76 meters and the maximum level for spillage is 235 meters, meaning only 1.24 meters needed for the spillage.

The planned spillage which will start between August 25-30, 2018, if the current rate of rise continues, is expected to cause the White Volta to swell and most likely occupy its normal flood plains, the VRA said in a statement.

“Accordingly, all stakeholders, residents, opinion leaders, security agencies, Chiefs, and people in the above-mentioned areas, as well as the general public are to take note of this flood alert and take the necessary precautionary measures to avoid being adversely affected by the impending spillage from the Bagre Dam.”

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has also informed those living along the banks of the Black and White Volta about the rising trend in the volume of water in the dam at 80% in the month of August this year as compared to 50% rise in the volume of water same period last year.

“It has become imperative that spillage of the dam, which was scheduled for first week in September this year, be done earlier than scheduled.”
