First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Rebecca Akufo, has offered her condolences to the family of former President Agyekum Kufuor over the recent passing of his wife, Theresa Kufuor.
The former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor, according to sources close to the family, passed away at the age of 87 at her home on Sunday, October 1.
For First Lady Rebecca Akufo, her predecessor’s passing fills her with “great sadness”.
In a Twitter post, she expressed her deepest condolence to the bereaved family and all who held Theresa Kufuor close to their heart.
“I have learnt with great sadness the passing of Former First Lady of our dear country, Mrs. Theresa Kufuor. My deepest condolences to Former President H.E John Agyekum Kufuor, the family, and friends, in these difficult times.”
Mrs. Kufuor held the esteemed position of Ghana’s First Lady from January 7, 2001, to January 6, 2009.
Her tenure commenced when her husband, John Agyekum Kufuor, assumed the presidency, succeeding Jerry John Rawlings. Their journey began when they met at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961, eventually leading to their marriage.
During her time as First Lady, Theresa Kufuor made a significant impact by establishing the Mother to Child Community Development Foundation. This foundation was dedicated to promoting the healthy development of children and preventing the transmission of diseases from mothers to their offspring.
Her efforts were instrumental in improving healthcare services, especially in the realms of maternal and child health. This, in turn, resulted in notable advancements in healthcare access and a reduction in maternal and child mortality rates within the nation.
Mrs. Kufuor was a passionate advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. She tirelessly championed various programs and policies aimed at elevating the status of women in Ghanaian society.
