Akufo-Addo’s appointees involved in galamsey will be dealt with should we come to power – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning that it will deal with officials of the Akufo-Addo government allegedly involved in illegal mining should there be a change of power in the 2024 elections.

Expressing deep concern about the devastating impact of illegal mining on the present and future generations, the NDC is demanding an immediate halt to such activities.

During a press conference as part of its ‘Moment of Truth Series’ on Monday, October 16, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, cautioned those implicated in the illegal mining issue to prepare for accountability.

“We hereby serve notice, that even if they are left off the hook today, they will not escape the long arms of the law tomorrow, because crime has no expiry date.”

“Until this is done, we shall make no headway in our fight against illegal mining and our beloved country, will have no sustainable future”.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply worried and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment”.

“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade’.  Their actions through their Attorney-General to continuously protect corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak loudly. Posterity will never forgive them,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi, however, laid the blame for the widespread destruction caused by illegal mining on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He contended that the two are actively involved in and supportive of the illegal mining trade, which explains the lack of action to combat it.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply concerned and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment.”

“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade.’ Their actions, through their Attorney-General, to continuously shield corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak volumes. Posterity will never forgive them,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the party is demanding the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, accusing him of attempting to conceal serious crimes committed by corrupt government and NPP officials involved in illegal mining.

“The NDC hereby demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General for his dubious attempt to cover up serious crimes that have been perpetrated against the state by corrupt government and NPP officials who are destroying our water bodies and forests through illegal mining.”

This demand comes after the Attorney General advised that former Environment Minister, Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s allegations in his report on illegal mining activities lacked substance. Mr. Dame emphasized that there was no evidence to prosecute individuals named in the report.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng had identified some high-ranking government officials as complicit in the illegal mining problem, even reaching as far as the Jubilee House, the seat of government. He also alleged that the claims of some 500 missing excavators seized from illegal miners in 2020 were fabricated by certain government figures to discredit him.

Since his revelations, calls for accountability from government officials and individuals involved in illegal mining have increased. However, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has advised against giving much attention to the 36-page report authored by Prof. Frimpong Boateng titled “Report on the work of IMCIM so far and the way forward.”
