Akufo-Addo opens valve for receipt of first Karpower gas

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has opened the valve for the receipt of the first gas for the 470 megawatts Karpowership.

The power ship which was previously located in Tema was relocated to Sekondi on August 15 this year to access gas from the Sankofa fields, Gbcghanaonline.com reports.

In June 2014, Karpowership signed a 450 MW contract with Electricity Company of Ghana to deploy a Powership for a period of 10 years.

Powerships have been in operation in Tema since 2015 utilising Heavy Fuel Oil of approximately thirty thousand tonnes per month which translates into nine million dollars monthly.

Ghana Gas to commence supply of gas to Karpowership tomorrow

It against this background that, government took the decision to relocate the Powership to Sekondi in order to utilize natural gas from the Sankofa Fields Offshore Cape Three Point.

The Power ship would require about 90mmscf/d to generate 470 megawatts of electricity into the national grid.

President Akufo-Addo said sustainable energy to power industry is a priority for the government, and that, government will work with all stakeholders to meet the energy needs of the country.

He said, with the utilization gas from Sankofa Fields hundreds of millions of dollars will be saved which will inure to the benefits of the country.

According to the President, the renegotiated agreement with the Turkish company has resulted in mutually beneficial outcomes for both parties.

He said, the development process is not reversible, adding that, the right measures will be put in place for the overall benefits of the country and its people.

Karpowership now in Sekondi

For his part, the Minister of Energy, Peter Amewu said the seamless and interrupted power during the relocation process is as a result of good energy management system put in place through the collaboration of the various agencies in the energy sector.

The Managing Director of Karpowership, Volkan Buyukbicer indicated that the success of the project was through the collaboration of all stakeholders.

He commended government for its commitment to ensuring the availability of reliable energy at a relatively cheaper cost.
