The murder of a 60-year-old woman suspected of practising witchcraft in Janga, West Mamprusi district, is being looked into by police in the North East. A young man who is related to the woman is said to have shot the victim.
After that, her body was brought to the WaleWale Hospital for an autopsy.
Zakari Iddi, the deceased’s brother-in-law, claimed that the woman was at home when the assailant arrived and shot her.
“She was in her room and they pulled out to the entrance and they shot her. All that I know is that she is suspected of witchcraft,” Iddi told Citi News.
In 2020, Ghana’s parliament approved a bill to protect those who are accused of practising witchcraft, making it illegal to mistreat them or expel them from communities.
The 90-year-old woman’s lynching in Kafaba, East Gonja Municipality, Savannah Region, in July 2020 drew criticism from regional and global human rights organisations, leading to the passage of the law.
