In a Euro 2024 qualifying match on Monday, Portugal achieved a historic 9-0 victory over Luxembourg, even in the absence of star player Cristiano Ronaldo, who was suspended for the game due to accumulating three yellow cards.
Despite the absence of their renowned captain, Portugal dominated Luxembourg, with Goncalo Inacio, Goncalo Ramos, and Diogo Jota each scoring twice.
Ricardo Horta, Bruno Fernandes, and Joao Felix also contributed a goal each, sealing a comprehensive victory.
Manager Martinez expressed his satisfaction, emphasising that his team is now well-prepared to secure victories even when Ronaldo is not in the lineup.
However, he also emphasised that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to play a crucial role within the squad.
Speaking to reporters after the Luxembourg clash, Martinez said: “Cristiano is a very important part of this team, and Pepe too. They have a contagious level and way of working and give our team important value.
“We need to give opportunities and Gonçalo Ramos and Jota showed what they can do. Ronaldo has experience and a special way of being; we don’t need to create doubts or comparisons. This team is prepared to win without Cristiano too.”
The win over Luxembourg was Portugal’s biggest international victory to date. Portugal now have 18 points from six matches in Euro 2024 qualifying and are sitting at the top of Group J.
