In a thrilling Premier League clash, Tottenham staged two comebacks to deny Manchester United a victory in front of their new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ratcliffe, attending his first match since confirming a proposed 25% purchase of the club on Christmas Eve, expressed excitement about being present.
Despite Rasmus Hojlund giving United an early lead in the third minute, Brazilian striker Richarlison equalized for the visitors. Marcus Rashford then put the hosts ahead before Rodrigo Bentancur leveled the score a minute into the second half with a powerful shot.
During the game, Ratcliffe, seated alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the directors’ box, witnessed Tottenham dominating possession with 16 shots compared to United’s nine, and only a third of United’s six shots on target.
The draw wasn’t enough for Tottenham to surpass rivals Arsenal in the standings, but it maintained an eight-point lead over United, who could drop to 10th place before their next fixture against Wolves on February 1.
Ratcliffe had a privileged viewing experience as Hojlund and Rashford, who had collectively scored only four Premier League goals before this game, found the net. Both players played crucial roles in each other’s goals, adding to the significance of the occasion.
Hojlund’s early goal showcased a surge in confidence, while Rashford, aided by Bruno Fernandes and Hojlund, scored a well-executed goal. Despite Rashford’s performance, he seemed discontent when substituted three minutes from time.
Tottenham’s Betancur, a fan favorite, had an eventful day, clearing a shot off the line, receiving a caution for a needless action, and scoring a brilliant goal, marking his return from injury.
Tottenham deserved at least a draw, with new signing Radu Dragusin making his debut. However, concerns arose as Micky van de Ven was forced off with an injury, with hopes that it’s fatigue-related as he returned after a two-month hamstring injury absence.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team after the match, revealing that some players had struggled with illness during the week, including Dejan Kulusevski, who missed out due to being unwell.
