Prominent Ghanaian business mogul Daniel McKorley, known as McDan, has revealed that gambling is the reason he has not sponsored the Ghana Premier League.
He expressed concern over the prevalence of gambling, particularly in relation to Ghana Premier League matches, and stated that he does not want to invest in such an environment.
McKorley mentioned that he aspires to sponsor the league, but the association with betting is a significant barrier preventing him from doing so.
“The gambling is too much. They are using betting to destroy our football. If not, I would have sponsored it [Ghana Premier League]. Sometimes they play a ball and a goalkeeper will go a different way for the ball to score just for someone to win a bet.
He highlighted that the prevalence of betting in football is one reason why Ghanaian players struggle to progress, emphasizing the need for reforms in the sport during an interview with Asempa FM on August 14, 2024.
In response to these concerns, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku assured that efforts are underway to secure a headline sponsor for the league, which would provide much-needed financial support.
Many league clubs have expressed frustration over the financial strain caused by the absence of sponsorship, leading to delayed salary payments and various management challenges.
