On Thursday, December 14, 2023, Parliament approved a budget of GH¢195.7 million presented by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Minister Mustapha Ussif explained that a significant portion of the funds would be allocated to support all sporting activities in 2024, with a special focus on the 2023 All-African Games hosted in Ghana.
Ussif highlighted ongoing projects, including the construction of the largest aqua centre in Africa, a 1,000-seat multi-purpose hall for indoor games, and five tennis courts. Additionally, he mentioned the revamping and modernization of the University of Ghana Stadium, which is in its final stages of completion and will be used for hosting games.
“With this massive work that we are doing, we can only ask this honourable House to support us by approving this budget so that we can finish our preparations for hosting the entire continent here,” he said as quoted by graphicsportsonline.com
“We are expecting over 5,000 athletes, 3,000 officials, 2,000 volunteers and an expected one billion online and global viewers,” he added.
The African Games are scheduled to take place from March 8 to 23, 2024. Minister Mustapha Ussif mentioned that, in addition to the projects related to the All African Games, six out of the ten stadiums intended as youth centres have been successfully completed.
He further announced that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will commission one of these youth centres in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on December 28, 2023.
