Luis Rubiales has stepped down as Spanish Football Federation president after controversy surrounding a non-consensual kiss with Spain forward Jenni Hermoso at the Women’s World Cup final presentation ceremony.
Hermoso filed a legal complaint, and Rubiales submitted his resignation, citing his inability to continue.
He has also resigned from his position as vice-president of Uefa’s executive committee.
The incident overshadowed Spain’s World Cup win, and a prosecutor filed a complaint against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion. Rubiales had previously claimed the kiss was mutual and consensual but was provisionally suspended by Fifa.
His departure may impact Spain’s joint bid with Morocco and Portugal to host the 2030 World Cup.
Some 81 Spain players vowed not to play for the national team while Rubiales remained in his position.
Rubiales’ mother went on a hunger strike in his hometown during the controversy, and regional football heads demanded his resignation.
The high court will assess the complaint, potentially leading to formal charges against Rubiales, including possible legal consequences.
