Kwasi Appiah speaks on Black Stars line-up for 2023 AFCON

Former Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah has expressed support for the Black Stars squad chosen for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

On January 1, 2023, current Ghana coach Chris Hughton unveiled the 27-man squad for the continental tournament, with a notable inclusion of only three local players: Abdul Fatawu Hamidu and Jonathan Sowah from Medeama, and Richmond Lamptey from Kotoko.

Star players such as Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams, and Mohammed Kudus were also part of the squad.

Unfortunately, deputy captain Thomas Partey will miss AFCON due to an ongoing hamstring injury, emphasising a cautious approach to his recovery.

James Kwasi Appiah, now the head coach of the Sudan national team, expressed his satisfaction with the selected Black Stars squad in an interview with Sienu TV, as monitored by Footballghana.com.

“I think we’ve got a good squad. I’m in support of the players selected by the coach for the tournament but the only thing I am hoping for is the coach being bold to take decisions as to who should play or who should be on the bench and ones he is able to do that, looking at the list, I think they can compete at any level,” he said.
