Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah handed six-month contract extension

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah’s contract has been extended for six months, ensuring he is in charge of the Black Stars until the end of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars trainer was angling for a two-year extension to his expiring contract but he has only being handed a six month deal until the end of the tournament in Egypt.

The ex-defender’s two-year contract expires next month but the Normalisation Committee of the GFA wants the coach’s long-term future to be decided pending his performance at the AFCON.

With six months to the end of the tournament, Chairman of the Normalisation Committee Dr Kofi Amoah insists Appiah will only be handed a contract until the end of the tournament in Egypt.

“Government has decided to extend Coach Kwasi Appiah ‘s contract to cover the AFCON period. We will ensure we get our money’s worth,” Kofi Amoah said on Friday.

“Coach Kwasi Appiah needs to win the 2019 AFCON. If he doesn’t win, he is gone. This is stated in his contract.”

Kofi Amoah said the Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah will be shown the exit door if he fails to win AFCON 2019 in Egypt.

Ghana has already qualified to this year’s show piece to be staged in Egypt.

The Black Stars will have a tall mountain to climb to win the title as the countries participating in the tournament have been increased from 16 to 24.

Having won the continental trophy on four occasions the Black Stars has failed to win it for the past 37 years.
