Former Celtic midfielder Landry Nguemo dies in Cameroon

Former Celtic and Cameroon international midfielder Landry N’Guemo has tragically passed away following a car accident in Cameroon.

The 38-year-old, known for his time at Celtic during the 2009-10 season, had a career that spanned various countries, including France, Turkey, and Norway.

N’Guemo began his professional football career with French side AS Nancy, where he developed his skills as a defensive midfielder.

His talent soon led him to a loan spell at Celtic, where he played over 40 matches under managers Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon.

N’Guemo made his competitive debut for Celtic in a Champions League qualifying match against Dynamo Moscow, quickly becoming a key player for the team.

After his stint at Celtic, N’Guemo went on to play for several other clubs, including Girondins de Bordeaux in France, where he continued to make significant contributions on the field.

His international career with Cameroon spanned from 2006 to 2014, during which he was a vital member of the national team, earning over 40 caps and participating in multiple African Cup of Nations tournaments.

The Cameroon Football Federation confirmed N’Guemo’s death, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “The Cameroonian Football Federation has just learned the tragic news of the passing of former Indomitable Lion Landry N’Guemo in a traffic accident,” the federation announced.

“Nguemo, who was a key player for the Cameroonian national team from 2006 to 2014 and a former member of Girondins de Bordeaux, will be remembered for his contributions to football. FECAFOOT extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football community.”

Celtic Football Club also paid tribute to their former player, expressing their shock and sadness at the news of his untimely death.

“Everyone at Celtic Football Club is shocked and saddened at the news of Landry N’Guemo’s passing at the young age of 38,” the club stated on their website.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with Landry’s family and friends at this sad time.”

N’Guemo’s legacy in football is marked by his dedication, skill, and sportsmanship. His journey from AS Nancy to various international clubs and his significant role in the Cameroon national team highlights a career filled with memorable moments and contributions to the sport.
