Legendary French footballer Karim Benzema recently received criticism from some social media users after voicing his opinion on the 2024 Ballon d’Or outcome, suggesting that Manchester City midfielder Rodri was undeserving of the win over Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.
Reflecting on the award, Benzema acknowledged Rodri’s skill in the midfield but argued that he lacks the extraordinary impact that Vinicius brings, which he believes captivates fans more.
The 2022 Ballon d’Or recipient expressed these sentiments in a tweet shared on ESPN FC’s X account, maintaining that Vinicius, his former Real Madrid teammate, would have been a more fitting choice for the award.
“I have nothing against Rodri, who is a good player. But I’m on my couch, I watch television, and Rodri does not do things that make me say: ‘Pfff,’ and Vinicius has done that more than once,” Benzema said.
Benzema’s comments drew significant backlash on social media, with many football fans accusing him of undervaluing Rodri’s contributions to his club and national team.
Critics expressed disappointment in the Al-Ittihad player for making such remarks, particularly given his status as a top athlete who should appreciate the game’s nuances.
Rodri’s achievements include several prestigious titles, such as the English Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA EURO 2024, all of which contributed to his recognition as the winner of the Ballon d’Or.
On the other hand, Vinicius Jr. also enjoyed a successful season, securing the UEFA Champions League, Super Cup, and Spanish La Liga titles with Real Madrid.
The contrast in their accolades highlights the competitive nature of football and the differing perspectives on player contributions.
