Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has initiated discussions with Frenkie de Jong regarding a potential contract extension at the club, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Relations between Barcelona and De Jong’s camp had been strained last summer due to discussions about a possible transfer to Manchester United.
However, given De Jong’s strong form, despite a recent injury, Barcelona is now eager to prolong his contract beyond its current term, ending in 2026.
Deco has conveyed to De Jong that the desire for contract renewal is not linked to creating more financial room within their LaLiga-imposed spending limits.
Barcelona recently extended the contract of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with the goalkeeper agreeing to lower wages in the coming years to help the club allocate more funds for player registrations in the current season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the conversation between Deco and De Jong had a “positive” tone, with the sporting director emphasising that the extension would be based on sporting achievements.
Nevertheless, official negotiations with the player’s representatives have not yet commenced.
