Africa’s finest players to be celebrated by CAF on Dec 11

The prestigious CAF Awards will be making a highly anticipated return on December 11, 2023, in Morocco, to honor the shining stars of African football.

Following the success of last year’s event held in Rabat, Morocco, where Sadio Mane from Senegal and Asisat Oshoala from Nigeria and Barcelona claimed top honors, the upcoming CAF Awards will once again showcase some of Africa’s finest talents.

The specific time and host city for the event will be communicated by CAF in due course.

The awards ceremony will recognize outstanding performances from both club and national team players over the past year, with the most awaited moment being the announcement of the CAF African Player of the Year in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Mane and Oshoala will face tough competition from other talented stars who have excelled in the last 12 months across the continent.

Previous winners in the men’s category include iconic players like Yaya Toure, Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba, Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez, Nwankwo Kanu, Abedi Pele, and the legendary George Weah.

In the women’s category, Oshoala has dominated in recent years, winning multiple times. However, she will still face competition from other previous winners such as Thembi Kgatlana and Perpetua Nkwocha, who are still actively contributing to the sport.

Apart from the African Player of the Year awards, various other honors will be at stake, including Interclub Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, National Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Club of the Year, and Goal of the Year.

The Interclubs Women’s Player of the Year award, introduced last year after the successful launch of the CAF Women’s Champions League, will continue to be part of the event this year.

The period under review for the CAF Awards 2023 will span from September 2022 to June 2023, capturing an extraordinary chapter in African football history.
