The 2023 African Games have been moved to 2024, according to the Local Organising Committee (LOC), which made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday in Accra.
The rescheduled event’s dates were not specified by the committee. Initially, the games were slated to run from Friday, August 4, 2023, to Saturday, August 19, 2023.
Due to disagreements with the African Union over the marketing rights of the games, African sporting federations had threatened the games.
But after a new protocol agreement was signed last week in Addis Abeba on the sidelines of the AU Heads of State Summit, these problems were resolved.
Ghana has had difficulty getting the event’s necessary hosting facilities ready.
Construction works at the Borteyman Sports Complex, earmarked to host the swimming, boxing, and indoor sporting events, are notoriously behind schedule, while organizers also face a race against time to complete the University of Ghana Stadium.
Work on the games village has also faced complications from the University of Ghana academic calendar, with the continuous presence of students at the Diaspora Halls making it difficult for refurbishment works to progress at the required pace.
