Lagos State in Nigeria has announced the immediate implementation of a ban on Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.
The decision comes as non-biodegradable plastics contribute significantly to pollution, causing drain blockages.
Authorities in the state plan to enforce a dormant 2009 law, imposing fines or imprisonment on violators.
Lagos, one of Africa’s most populous cities, aims to address the environmental impact of plastic waste.
International estimates suggest that Nigeria generates approximately 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually.
