Militants in Niger’s northwest region have reportedly killed at least 23 soldiers and wounded 17 others, according to the country’s defence ministry.
The attack, carried out by over 100 armed individuals on motorcycles, involved the use of improvised explosive devices and suicide bombs to ambush a military unit returning from an operation in the Tillabéri region.
The ministry reported that 30 attackers were also killed in the incident.
Following a coup last year, Niger’s military rulers severed ties with Western allies, leading French forces to depart, who had been leading the international efforts against the jihadists.
Recently, the authorities announced the cancellation of an agreement allowing US troops to be stationed in Niger.
