Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission (EC), warning that its current actions could jeopardize Ghana’s democratic stability.
Speaking at an anti-corruption event at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Monday, September 2, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe labeled the EC as a major threat to democracy, suggesting their conduct could lead to national turmoil.
“I am saying at the moment, the greatest threat to have democracy is the Electoral Commission, that is the greatest threat to our democracy, and if we are not careful, they will lead this country into destruction, mark my words,” he said.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, who has firsthand experience with political upheaval, underscored his concerns by recounting his own imprisonment during past coups.
He criticized the EC for mishandling recent issues, particularly citing unauthorized transfers of voters between constituencies.
“I’ve seen coup d’etat in this country, I have been part of coup d’etat in this country, and I know what I’m talking about. I spent almost five years of my life in prison,” he stated, emphasising the gravity of the situation.
He argued that these actions, carried out without proper consent, could significantly disrupt the electoral process.
“How on earth can transfers be made from one particular constituency to another without the consent of others? These are facts,” he quizzed.
This criticism comes as the EC faces heightened scrutiny from various stakeholders, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
