The Minister-Designate for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar strongly opposes suggestions to abolish or merge the Information Ministry with the Ministry of Communications.
During her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, March 8, Abubakar emphasized the crucial role of maintaining the Information Ministry as an independent entity, citing past challenges and adverse impacts when the two ministries were merged.
Abubakar highlighted the difficulties faced by various agencies under the ministry during previous mergers with the Communications Ministry.
She expressed her belief that advocating for increased allocation and raising awareness about the ministry’s importance would be more beneficial than considering a merger.
Speaking about the struggles faced by agencies under the merged ministry, Abubakar emphasized the visible evidence of these challenges in the Ministry of Information and ISD buildings today.
She stressed the need for a sector ministry dedicated to prioritizing the welfare of these non-income-generating entities, emphasizing their vital role in serving the public and the overall improvement in the ministry’s performance through this approach.
