Bawumia jabs Mahama for ‘worst economic performance’ amid economic distress

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has sharply criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s economic record, labeling it as the weakest among the Fourth Republic’s leaders.

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala held at the Movenpick Hotel on Thursday, November 7, Dr. Bawumia insisted that his assessment was based on economic data rather than partisan bias.

He highlighted that under Mahama’s administration, Ghana faced considerable economic setbacks, including high inflation, sluggish growth, and increasing unemployment—issues he believes set the nation on a vulnerable path.

Dr. Bawumia noted that these indicators starkly contrast with the economic gains made under the NPP, pointing to what he considers a decisive shortfall in Mahama’s economic governance. He underscored the importance of accountable leadership and sound economic management, urging attendees to examine the measurable impacts of Mahama’s policies.

“It is important to note that notwithstanding the impact of the global economic crisis on our economy, it may come as a shock to some (including the former president himself) that when it comes to the 4th Republic, Former President Mahama has the worst economic performance of all Presidents in the Fourth Republic,” he stated. “However, he seems not to understand that and continues to talk about our economic performance as if his was better.”

Dr. Bawumia made the comment at a time when Ghana is facing economic difficulties, including high inflation, public debt, and rising costs of food and transportation—issues some Ghanaians attribute to the current government.

Nevertheless, the Vice President has expressed confidence in his ability to address these challenges should he assume the presidency, pledging to continue building on the economic progress made by the Akufo-Addo administration.
