Actress and socialite Efia Odo has joined the #FreeCitizens campaign, which is currently gaining traction on social media.
This movement follows the recent arrests of protestors from the #StopGalamseyNow and #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations, including socialite Ama Governor and artist Glenn Samm, during a three-day protest at Accra’s 37 Military Roundabout.
On September 25, 2024, Efia Odo took to X to express her outrage over the detention of these activists, labeling it as a form of ‘oppression.’ She questioned,
“Set us free from oppressors’ rule, who is our oppressor? Before, we used to blame the white man but if we search deeply it’s our own skin folk causing the oppression. Protestors arrested without bail for what exactly? Are we not allowed to care for the future of this country again?” she asked.
Efia also pondered the challenge of choosing the right political party to support, suggesting that even the opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), might not be capable of rectifying the government’s missteps.
She voiced her frustration with the political landscape, stating, “The crazy part of all of this is, we still have to vote. Who do we even vote for? Someone will say, “the lesser evil”. Excuse my language but we’re fu**ked as a people and as a country. If NDC comes into
“Power it will take more than 4 years to correct any wrongs. I can’t imagine what NPP will also do if they stay in power. Ghana used to be one of the best African countries in the world, but overly corrupt politicians have destroyed our reputation. We don’t have Leaders, we have oppressors,” she added.
In her remarks, she lamented how Ghana, once a leading nation in Africa, has been brought down by corrupt politicians, stating, “We lack true leaders; instead, we have oppressors.”
Background
The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters were arrested during their demonstration, which took place over the weekend.
The arrests followed a three-day protest at the 37 military Roundabout, where demonstrators raised concerns about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.
On Sunday, September 22, tensions escalated as a major confrontation occurred between protesters from Democracy Hub and the Ghana Police Service, marking the second day of the demonstrations.
The protestors have been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court. They face five charges: conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct, breach of public peace, and assault on public officers.
They pleaded not guilty to all charges and are set to reappear in court on October 8, 2024.
