UEW Governing Council meets on Monday over recent violence

The governing Council of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) is expected to hold an emergency council meeting on Monday March 18, 2019 to resolve the impasse between some lecturers and Vice Chancellor of the University.

Tension enveloped the school last week following the dismissal of some senior lecturers by the Vice-Chancellor Reverend Father Professor A. Afful-Broni with students on the other hand engaging in days of protestations against the move.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong led a delegation on the instruction of the Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh to the school to calm down tempers.

But a communique sighted by MyNewsGh.com from the Council Chairman of UEW, dropping a hint about the meeting that reads, “The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba has noted with concern the recent happenings on our Winneba campuses, especially with regard to agitations escalating into violence on life and property. The university is currently assessing the damage caused and will release a detailed Press Statement to address the issues including the misinformation that has taken the airwaves regarding the university.

The University is committed to the directive of the Regional Minister, Chairman of REGSEC to close the Winneba and Ajumako campuses of the University until further notice. Early next week when Council shall meet, details of the way forward for the University will be communicated to the University Community and the General Public.

We are by this release appealing to all to remain calm and to assure the nation that we shall do all in our power to restore calm and normalcy to campus as soon as possible”.
